Making a Success of Brexit and Reforming the EU [electronic resource] : The Brexit edition of The Trouble with Europe

Bootle, Roger2015
eBook
The EU needs fundamental reform: it has not delivered the prosperity and growth it promised; the euro has turned out to be part of the problem rather than the solution; the EUs share of world GDP is set to fall sharply. Moreover, no one is clear what the EU is for, or how ever closer union can be matched with expanding borders and huge disparities of income and culture. The EU is the most important thing that stands between Europe and success. Cut down to size, renationalized, and democratically controlled, the EU could prosper. But there are serious political barriers to this and also real alternatives. Leaving the EU would not be risk-free, but BREXIT is a viable option for the UK. This updated and expanded edition of Roger Bootle s critically acclaimed book includes new material on federal union, policies to avert catastrophe in the Eurozone (including the Greek situation) and mass migration. It s time to raise the level of debate, examine the options, and tackle the trouble with Europe.

Biography/History:
One of London's best-known economists, Roger Bootle runs Capital Economics, Europe's largest independent economics consultancy, which he founded in 1999. Roger is also a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee. He was formerly Group Chief Economist of HSBC and, under the previous Conservative government, he was one of the Chancellor's panels of Independent Economic Advisers, the so-called “Wise Men". In July 2012, Roger and a team from Capital Economics won the prestigious Wolfson Economics Prize. Roger appears frequently on television and radio and is also a regular columnist for The Daily Telegraph. In The Comment Awards 2012 he was named Economics Commentator of the year. Roger Bootle has often challenged conventional wisdom and frequently been proved right. For instance, in 1996 he published the prophetic book The Death of Inflation and in Money For Nothing (2003) he correctly forecast the impending crisis. His book The Trouble with Markets (2009) shaped the debate about reform of the financial system. The Trouble with Europe will shape the continuing debate over the EU.
